Lisbon, a city that pleasantly surprised me. It invites you to lose yourself in its beautiful streets, vibrant neighborhoods, and yummy cuisine. I genuinely fell in love with this fantastic city and would love to go back. Here is a guide of my favorite things to do in Lisbon:

Best things to do in Lisbon

1. Alfama

Explore Alfama, the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, full of charming streets to stroll, stunning views, quirky shops, and famous for Fado, the traditional music of Portugal. Take your time to take pictures and enjoy the area.

2. Tram 28

While I didn’t experience this myself, I wish I had! Start your Lisbon exploration by hopping aboard the iconic Tram 28—a traditional yellow carriage winding through historic neighborhoods. Traveling from Graça to Martim Moniz, it’s not just transportation; it’s a beautiful way to discover the city beyond walking.

3. Belém Tower

The Belém Tower, a remarkable fortress standing at the Tagus River, is a UNESCO World Heritage site narrating tales of maritime adventures and Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Consider purchasing tickets in advance, especially during the summer when queues can be long.

4. LX Factory

LX Factory is a former industrial complex transformed into an artistic place, it showcases Lisbon’s innovative spirit. Explore hipster cafes, art galleries, and charming shops located within these repurposed factory walls.

5. Castelo de São Jorge

Discover Lisbon's history at Castelo de São Jorge. This iconic castle, on a hill, offers panoramic views and a journey through Portuguese heritage. Explore ancient walls, archaeological finds, and the stories of conquests. A must-visit for a look into Lisbon's past.

6. Miradouros: Views that Take Your Breath Away

One of my favorite spots in Lisbon, it provides the most picturesque panorama of the city. The flowers add to its charm, and often, there are artists creating music, making the experience even better. Whether admiring São Jorge Castle or enjoying the scenery from Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, each view reveals a different facet of this beautiful city.

7. Time Out Market: A Culinary Spot

A haven for food lovers, the Time Out Market in Cais do Sodré is a culinary delight. Indulge in diverse gastronomic offerings, from traditional Portuguese dishes to international flavors, all housed under one roof.

8. Mosteiro dos Jerónimos

My favorite place in Lisbon! There are no words to describe this breathtaking spot. A masterpiece of Manueline architecture, this iconic monastery stands as a testament to Portugal’s rich history and artistic brilliance. Again, buy those tickets online when you are going during a busy time, it is 12 euro (2024 price).

9. Bairro Alto: The Bohemian neighbourhood and the party to be

I loved Lisbon for the partying, Bairro Alto is the place to go if you want to get the full experience.. This trendy district comes alive after sunset, offering a mix of bars, live music, and a vibrant nightlife scene.

10. Sintra Day Trip: A Fairytale Escape

Take a break from the city with a day trip to Sintra, a fairytale-like town just a short train ride away. Explore the vibrant Pena Palace (ensure you buy tickets online), wander through the enchanting gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, visit Palace Montserate, and don't forget about the Castelo dos Mouros! If you're not one to plan, make an exception for Sintra—it gets very busy! We went without a plan, and it was challenging to get tickets. Getting a taxi is also tricky; be prepared to pay a lot more than usual or consider an organized bus tour.

What to eat:

I fell in love with Pastéis de Nata. Having never tried it before, it turned out to be incredibly delicious, affordable (1-2 euros), and the perfect dessert. When visiting the Belém Tower, don’t miss trying Pastéis de Belem at ‘Confeitaria Nacional’—they were truly exceptional!
