If you are planning a trip to Athens, you're in the right place. I always wanted to visit Athens so badly,

and in 2022, thanks to fencing, I finally got the chance.

I actually visited a lot and I barely paid anything for my visits!

Let me show you my top 10. Let's go, Athens!

1. Mount Lycabettus

Start your Athens adventure with a stunning view from Mount Lycabettus. You can hike up or take the funicular for around €10 (roundtrip). I walked up and I really liked the hike, it is totally safe, I did it on my own and enjoyed every view. I did it in winter though so maybe in summer it will be too hot.

2. Museum of the Acropolis

Get into ancient Greece at the Museum of the Acropolis. It is a very big museum, you can spend hours if you want, on some places you even have a nice views on the Acropolis. I really loved this museum. The prices vary from the period you go and your age but especially if you are a student from the European Union, I explain more here. But if you are a student, almost everything is free in Athens!

3. The Acropolis

The big to-do in Athens, the Acropolis! After so many history classes, I finally got to see it in real life, and it did not disappoint. Try to get there early in the morning to avoid crowds and take in the beautiful culture, reflecting on all the history that happened here.

Prices: €20 full price, €10 reduced (explained here), free for students under 25 from EU countries.

4. Monastiraki

Explore the nice neighborhood of Monastiraki. You can shop, eat, and soak up the vibe without spending much. Make sure you don’t miss the flea market!

5. Temple of Hephaestus and Ares

Visit this ancient temple for about 4 euro, full price. Check out the old columns and carvings and walk around. It’s pretty big and you can easily spend 1-2 hours. I liked it, it’s in the middle of the city and when you are done visiting you can get a pretty cheap coffee just in front and enjoy the view before moving on!

6. Temple of Zeus

See the Temple of Zeus for about €6 for the full price. When I was in Athens, there was construction going on, so I didn't get to see it very well, but it looks very pretty.

7. Plaka

Walk around Plaka, Athens' old area.

You can see old buildings and eat at local restaurants without spending a lot. It’s perfect to do this after the Temple of Zeus because it’s just next to it. I loved all the colours of the district. Depending on how much time you have, enjoy walking around and try some local food because the Greek food is just amazing!

8. Old Cemetery of Kerameikos

Explore this old cemetery (8 euro). Walk among old graves and learn about ancient Athens. I really liked it but if there is one of this list that you shouldn’t do, it would be this one. Only do it when you have the time.

The Old Cemetery and Hadrian’s Library

9. Hadrian's Library

Visit Hadrian's Library for about €3. I really liked this one; it's in the middle of the city center and is really pretty, with amazing views everywhere. Take your time to enjoy this one before moving on to the next.

10. Panathenaic Stadium

My favorite one!! Tickets are around €10 for the full price, but again for me, it was free. As an athlete, this place is amazing and a must-visit. This stadium was the venue for the first Olympic Games, and I can assure you that it's very motivating to see. It's a bit outside the center, but it's so worth it!

This was my top 10, and I hope you will enjoy Athens just like I did because it is a beautiful city and really affordable. Enjoy!

Prices of monuments and museums in Athens

Many people can visit museums and monuments for free in Athens. One of the most important categories for my readers is:

Persons over 25 years old, attending secondary education (including evening schools, second-chance schools), and vocational schools from EU member-states and countries of the European Economic Area, upon presentation of an attendance certificate proving its duration.

For more information on other categories, you can visit this website: https://www.culture.gov.gr/en/service/SitePages/view.aspx?iID=2695

From the first of November until the 31st of March, there is a 50% discount for all visitors. (You can find all information on the website above.

Transport

The Metro system in Athens is very good and affordable so just like any big city, this is the way to go! Here is the link to the public transport website for Athens: https://www.oasa.gr/en/

Food

Try the Greek food, every Greek restaurant is just amazing, I ate so much in Athens. So this is not the perfect trip to start your diet!
